Watkins cookbooks have been one of the cookbooks that many of our great-grandmothers used to cook with. As the Watkins peddler came for his normal visit to the homes, he often left behind one of the companies cookbooks for two reasons.
One, it was to help promote the company product line. The recipes called for the ingredients by the name of that product being sold. New housewives found the boxed or canned puddings and spices a fast way to follow a recipe that would normally turn out quite pleasing.
Second, the Watkins salesman knew that without the customer he would have no job. As the new books came out he happily provided his customers with a new book as a gesture of thanks and to encourage the happy homemaker to try new products required in the newer recipes.
My grandmothers and even my mother had many of the products and the cookbooks. I began collecting them a few years ago and have just about the entire set. You will find that many of todays recipes are adapted from a great many of those old Watkins basic recipes. They were delicious then and continue to be yummy yet today.
Watkins is very abundant yet today and well worth putting in your shopping basket for adding great taste to your meals. Try an old cookbook and see if the recipes aren't pleasing to your tastebuds.
